You can create real looking paint effects through the use of photoshop and painter but in this simple tutorial I have decided not to go that route and instead create a stylized paint effect that looks digital as I believe leave true painting to 100% hand based artists as the effects and tactile qualities of real paint will never be beaten. It will give you a real insight and if you expand on the simple effect shown you can create a real fantasy looking piece quickly and effectively.

Digital paint is a fl exible, versatile medium, but it can take practice and experimentation to fashion it into the fi nal image you see with your mind’s eye. Digital painting from scratch doesn’t need to be a venture into an unknown land, however. Welcome to this, a series of short paragraphs that will tell you everything you probably already knew about Photoshop. By me. Once reaching the end of these next few pages you will come to realize that you don’t need to know millions of different tools to paint
up something great enough to show off to your couple of good friends. All that is really needed is the bare minimum. And time. And plenty of cigarette breaks. Unless you are a non-smoker, then I suppose you can just punt around your pet turtle.

In this tutorial I will show how I produce my textured portrait images, from the creation of the textures themselves using traditional techniques and harnessing them through custom brush technique, to digitally layering the image thus creating a rich and textured, yet raw and expressive piece.
»Creating Gel Styles in PhotoshopRobert Anselmi
Gel Styles are very common these days. Windows Vista uses them in their new Operating System design, mainly in the Title bars on their windows, and Apple has been using them for years on their buttons. The gel look provides a plastic translucency to graphic objects, making them appear smooth and graduated. Photoshop can easily recreate this look using Layer Styles, and this is a perfect way to get to know Styles if you’re not already familiar with using them. I don’t intend to recreate the exact styles used by Microsoft or Apple, but rather demonstrate something similar.

Using Photoshop is basically the answer to any problems with computer generated images. But there are still other smaller specialized programs which can save you time, money and a lot of nerves. Without these brilliant examples of software I would have never been able to do
the following tutorial of Vincent Vega in the style of pop-artist Roy Lichtenstein.
